Protect Kids from Junk Food Marketing held sessions with community members to listen to their views on junk food marketing. Here are some direct quotes:

“It’s in your face, it’s everywhere, it’s on TV - McDonalds, KFC, all the ‘great’ food that everyone loves. And every time you go past McDonalds it’s advertised. Kids will go ‘grandma can I have McDonald’s’, it’s always there.”

“It’s not right but they (unhealthy food and drink companies) know they can make the money. It’s cheaper, it tastes better than healthy food, it’s more convenient. So, I feel like just such an easy target for that kind of advertising. Because they know it works.”

“It goes without saying that if you’re a four-year-old or a five-year-old your critical thinking skills aren’t really there, so when you see an ad for a Happy Meal you aren’t able to dig that they’re trying to sell you something. So, you see an ad for a Happy Meal, and it says it's only 7$ and it tastes nice, you take it at face value, that little boy or girl. Children should be protected from junk food marketing.”

“They (unhealthy food and drink companies) are targeting low-income families in South Auckland. It’s not fair. I was brought up in South Auckland and there wasn’t as much (junk food) adverting then, but now it’s everywhere, it’s in your face. I don’t think it’s right.”

“As soon as I see ads for 20 nuggets for 10 dollars, I’m there - whatever the KFC special is because the fast-food places bring products and then take them away, so advertising does play a massive part.”
